Tiny image causing concern

There is something on the gmail pages which is causing concern amongst people. When you log into your account and go your page right up in the top left hand corner you will notice a tiny dark spot, initially you could mistake it for something on the monitor screen. But upon closer inspection it soon becomes clear that it is part of the page.

But nothing happens if either left or right click on it or even try to highlight the image, as it happens it turns out to be a square which is around 10 x 10 pixels and diagonally split into grey and black.

So the question is what is it?

So far there has been nothing to shed any light on this mystery object, and yet it must be there for reason, is there anyone out there with any ideas?
