RIAA not suing just threatening
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been taking out lawsuits against file sharers for a long time; this is their way of protecting the copyright holders of the music etc.
But has this really done anything to prevent or stop the file sharers from doing what they do, the answer in short is no, therefore the RIAA will no longer be going after the individual file sharer in their mass lawsuits.
Instead they are going to go the internet service provider route, they are looking to convince the ISP’s to disconnect their users who are found to be file sharing copyrighted material.
This is the same principal that is going in Europe and the UK, but this has been followed with letters from lawyers demanding cash or court action, even removing the internet from users is not going to stop file sharing so it has to be back to square one.
